How we support independence

Teach it. Practice it. Then step back.

Every skill follows the same six stages, in the real setting, with the real item: the posted schedule, the pay stub, the local bus route.

  2. 2Prompt
  3. 3Practice
  4. 4Observe

What greater independence can look like

Not a program schedule. Ordinary days that run more and more on the person's own cues.

Running your home
  • Getting to work on time, and keeping the job.
  • Using the bus or Dial-A-Ride with more confidence.
  • Reading a paycheck and deciding how much to save.
  • Managing your morning routine with fewer reminders.
  • Moving into an apartment and keeping it running.
  • Handling changes and frustration more safely.
  • Cooking meals you actually want to eat.
  • Building relationships and taking part in your community.
